The Impact of Conflict on Human Security and Human Rights
Friday, 5 June, 2009
18:15 – 19:30
In what ways do conflicts threaten human rights and human security? What are the challenges of preserving human rights in conflict zones? Drawing from experiences in places such as Afghanistan, the Middle East, Darfur, Sri Lanka and Somalia, this panel aims to address these and other important questions related to conflict and human security. Emphasis of the discussion will be placed on how the international community can help prevent and respond to human rights abuses in conflict and post-conflict settings. In addition, the panel will explore the involvement of local actors, such as media, government and civil society, in maintaining and enhancing human security.
